Architectural Organization
By capturing the unoccupied space of Park Avenue’s median, the placement of an elevated bicycle highway allows for sustainable and quick access to the full east side of Manhattan. This fifteen station public access system plays off of the already existing bike routes of New York City, as well as the soon to be created ones within the Plan NYC initiative. To further the civic nature of the project, various public programs are inserted or located near the stations along the avenue. Programs such as a full service library, concert halls, La Maquetta Mile, as well as restaurants and cafés all act as additional benefits to the bicycle infrastructure. The project aims to civic natured, but also work as a form of sustainable transportation along the east side of the city. Building upon the proposals of Plan NYC this system works to connect the various neighborhoods of the east side through one main artery. The stations reflect the neighborhoods they locate themselves in, and house program that is responsive to the needs and people around them.
